The M4 formed the backbone of the American armoured forces and has been produced in numerous versions and variations. The Sherman “Wet” was developed during the operational life of the tank to reduce the risk of fire during frequent combat on the first versions produced. Introduced in 1944 it used fuel tanks positioned and designed to reduce the risk of explosions and fires. The solution of the tanks immersed in a solution of propylene glycol, hence the name “Wet”, was effective and crews appreciated their increased reliability and survival capabilities in combat.
